Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) diminishes fine lines, pore size, redness, broken capillaries, sun damage and pigmentation problems. While some lasers are better suited to improving the appearance by resurfacing the skin, IPL targets pigment below the skin surface to reverse signs of aging and sun damage without the downtime of laser resurfacing. Intense Pulsed Light Therapy also reduces redness caused by rosacea. Four to six sessions every three to four weeks are usually needed to achieve the best results.
No downtime is involved; patients can return to normal activities immediately.
The most common side effects are reddening of the skin and mild swelling. Blistering, pigmentation changes and scarring are very rare.
Pigmentation problems may be permanently treated, but the effects of stimulating new collagen formation are subject to aging. Any additional sun exposure will result in further damage. Results can be enhanced and protected by continuing daily skin care routines as recommended by your practitioner.
Results generally appear after one to two sessions.
Intense Pulsed Therapy lasts about half an hour.
Most patients experience a little discomfort. Some patients may feel heat or a slight stinging sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.
Patients with keloids, dark skin or dark tans may not be good candidates. Darker skin tones are prone to hyperpigmentation after the treatment. Intense Pulsed Light may not be recommended for those taking blood thinners.
Laser treatments and chemical peels are common alternatives.
Instructions before treatment: Do not tan or stay in the sun for extended periods of time before treatment. Avoid aspirin and other blood thinners.
Instructions after treatment: Avoid any sun exposure for 48 hours and wear SPF 30 sunscreen. Apply cool compresses to reduce swelling.
